Protecting Natural Teeth Before the Golden Time Is Missed

Hello, I am Dr. Hyunwoo Han of Medicell Dental Clinic.

As a dentist, one of the things I value most is helping patients preserve their natural teeth whenever possible. In many cases, a tooth that seems difficult to save may still have treatment options if it is diagnosed and treated at the right time.

That is why I always try to think carefully about what is truly best for each patient before beginning treatment.

Every Patient Has a Different Goal

Even when patients come in with similar symptoms, their needs and expectations can be very different.

Some patients want to relieve only the immediate discomfort. Others want a full checkup of their oral condition. Some may want to explore ways to preserve their natural teeth before considering implants or surgical treatment.

For this reason, I believe that good dental care begins with listening.

Before planning treatment, I first try to understand what the patient is most concerned about, what kind of result they are hoping for, and how much treatment they are comfortable receiving.

Consultation Comes Before Treatment Planning

Dental treatment is not simply about fixing what is visible. A proper treatment plan should consider the condition of the teeth, gums, bite, lifestyle habits, and the patient’s own treatment goals.

During consultation, I try not to present only one treatment option. Instead, I explain the advantages and disadvantages of each possible approach, the expected process, and alternative choices when available.

For example, I discuss whether preserving the natural tooth is still possible, whether root canal treatment or restorative treatment may help, or whether replacement options such as implants need to be considered.

I believe treatment should not be decided unilaterally by the dentist. It should be chosen together after the patient fully understands the diagnosis and agrees with the plan.

There Is a Golden Time for Saving Natural Teeth

One of the most regrettable moments in dental care is seeing a tooth that might have been saved if the patient had visited a little earlier.

What begins as a small cavity or mild gum inflammation can sometimes progress into nerve damage, infection around the tooth root, or severe periodontal problems. When treatment is delayed for too long, preserving the natural tooth may become much more difficult.

Once a natural tooth is lost, it cannot be brought back to its original state. Although implants, crowns, bridges, and dentures can replace missing teeth, keeping the original tooth is often the best option whenever it is still possible.

This is why I often emphasize the importance of not missing the “golden time” for dental treatment.

Even if the pain is not severe, symptoms such as discomfort while chewing, swollen gums, tooth sensitivity, or pain around a previously treated tooth should not be ignored. An accurate diagnosis at the right time can make a meaningful difference.

We First Ask Whether the Treatment Is Truly Necessary

One of the standards I keep in mind at Medicell Dental Clinic is this question: “Is this treatment truly necessary for this patient right now?”

There are many areas of dental care, including implants, orthodontics, prosthodontic treatment, restorative treatment, and temporomandibular joint care. However, not every treatment is necessary for every patient.

Rather than expanding the treatment range unnecessarily, I believe it is more important to find the most appropriate treatment for each patient’s condition.

Whenever possible, I first consider ways to preserve the natural tooth. More active treatment is recommended only when it is truly needed.

In some cases, patients may need more time before making a decision. When that happens, I do not rush them into treatment on the same day. I believe that treatment chosen with full understanding and confidence often leads to greater comfort in the long term.

Reducing Dental Anxiety Is Also Part of Care

Many people feel nervous before visiting the dentist. Some have had painful experiences in the past, while others worry about the treatment process, cost, or treatment period.

That is why I believe helping patients feel comfortable in the dental chair is also an important part of treatment.

After completing treatment, one patient once told me, “I always felt anxious about going to the dentist, but I felt much more comfortable because you listened to my concerns first.”

Hearing those words reminded me that good dental care is not completed by technique alone. A patient must also feel heard, respected, and reassured throughout the process.

Continuing to Learn and Improve

Dentistry continues to change and develop. New diagnostic standards, dental materials, digital equipment, surgical techniques, and tooth-preserving treatment methods are constantly being introduced.

To avoid standing still, I have studied in the United States and Japan, and I continue to learn new approaches and techniques that may lead to better care.

However, no matter how advanced the equipment or technique may be, the center of treatment should always be the patient.

I continue to ask myself whether the treatment can help the patient keep their teeth longer, whether it is truly necessary, and whether I can feel confident about the care I provided even after leaving the clinic.

In Closing

I believe a dental clinic is not simply a place where one-time treatment is performed. It is a place where patients can receive long-term support for their oral health.

As a dentist, I want to listen carefully, explain clearly, and think together with each patient about the best possible treatment direction.

To help patients avoid missing the golden time for saving natural teeth, I will continue to consider preservation first whenever possible.

Care that does not compromise conscience. Care that patients can understand and accept.

With that standard in mind, I will continue to stand in the treatment room each day.

Thank you.
