Hello.

I’m Dr. Hyunwoo Han of Medicell Dental Clinic, a multilingual dental clinic where we work together with our patients to find the best treatment options without missing the critical window to preserve natural teeth whenever possible.

The most important thing I value in dental care is trust between the dentist and the patient.

I believe good dental care is built on more than medical knowledge alone.

It begins with understanding the concerns each patient has, the environment and background they come from, and the kind of explanation they need to feel comfortable with their treatment.

There is one particular experience that has greatly shaped this philosophy for me.

It is my experience with dental education and licensing in Japan, Korea, and the United States.

Studying in Japan: 10 Years of Growth in a New Environment

I spent approximately 10 years studying and living in Japan.

When I first moved to Japan, I was excited about experiencing a new environment, but I also had many concerns.

Japan is geographically close to Korea and shares certain cultural similarities, so I found it to be a relatively comfortable environment for adapting to life abroad.

As I gradually learned the language and communicated directly with people, I learned more than just how to speak another language.

I also learned how to understand the culture and people of another country.

These experiences continue to provide an important foundation for the way I communicate with patients today.

Living in Japan for many years also taught me that the same message can be understood differently depending on a person’s culture and environment.

That experience continues to help me when explaining treatment procedures and listening carefully to what my patients have to say.

How International Dental Licensing Experiences Broadened My Perspective

At first, I considered pursuing a dental license in the United States as my primary goal.

However, because I was living in Japan at the time, I first took on the challenge of the Japanese dental licensing process.

Later, as a Korean national, I obtained my Korean dental license and eventually went through the U.S. dental licensing process as well.

Each country has its own approach to dental education and professional licensing.

The Japanese licensing process required a high level of preparation.

It took thorough preparation and consistent effort, and through that experience I learned the importance of mastering the fundamentals and persevering until the end.

The U.S. licensing process was another new challenge.

Pursuing professional qualifications overseas requires more than simply preparing for examinations.

It also requires time, financial resources, and careful planning.

Going through these different licensing processes taught me something important.

It is not about one country’s healthcare system being better than another.

Each country has its own strengths and standards, and experiencing those differences can help a healthcare professional grow.

Diverse Experiences Have Broadened the Way I See My Patients

Before beginning my career as a dental professional in Korea, I had the opportunity to experience educational and professional systems in several countries.

Naturally, those experiences gave me a broader perspective.

In Japan, I learned the importance of fundamentals and principles.

In the United States, I was exposed to an evolving healthcare system and different professional standards.

And in Korea, I once again learned the importance of providing the care and communication that our patients need.

Looking back, none of these experiences were easy.

However, each experience became part of the standards and principles that guide the way I care for patients today.

Rather than simply asking what treatment is technically possible, I try to consider each patient’s current situation as well as their long-term oral health.

From there, we can think together about what may be the most appropriate option.

Multilingual Dental Care for More Comfortable Communication

Today, patients from many different backgrounds visit dental clinics.

When there is a language difference, the way a patient understands treatment—and the anxiety they may feel about it—can also be different.

That is why I believe dental care should involve more than providing medical information.

I place great importance on communication that helps patients understand their options comfortably and make informed decisions about their treatment.

My experiences living in Japan and the United States, along with the experience I gained in multilingual environments, have become valuable assets in helping me communicate more closely with patients.

Experience Is Ultimately Part of Providing Better Dental Care

Ten years of studying and living in Japan, along with my experiences with dental licensing in Japan, Korea, and the United States.

For me, these experiences were about more than simply building a professional career.

They were opportunities to see patients from a broader perspective, understand a wider range of circumstances, and continue thinking about what better dental care should look like.

Studying and living in different environments also reinforced something fundamental for me:

the importance of basic principles.

No matter how good a treatment option may be, I believe it can only become truly meaningful care when the patient understands it sufficiently and feels confident in the treatment process.

For patients looking for multilingual dental care, clear explanations and communication can be just as important as the treatment itself.

Understanding differences in language and cultural background, and creating an environment where patients can feel comfortable receiving dental care, are also important parts of the standards I strive to uphold.

I will continue learning and growing as a dental professional rather than remaining satisfied with where I am today.

My goal is to create an environment where patients can receive dental care comfortably regardless of their language or background, and where they can feel confident placing their trust in us.

Drawing on my diverse experiences, I will continue to think carefully about what patient-centered dental care should be.
